ZooTampa at Lowry Park is considered to be one of the Nation’s best and most family-friendly parks there is. If you are looking for something to do in Tampa this is a must. Previously known as the “Lowry Park Zoo,” the 63-acre nonprofit zoo located in Tampa changed its name and logo in 2018.
When you arrive at the zoo will find ample FREE parking and usually the lines are too long. Upon entering ZooTampa you find photographers ready and willing to take your picture for you keepsake. Just a few steps beyond this point and you will find the iconic manatee fountain that usually has children running around playing to keep cool.
Entering the Zoo
Once you enter you soon realize that this is one place that knows how to balance education, preservation and fun. From the animals to the merry-go-round there is plenty to do and see. From the wild family friendly water adventure known as Roaring Springs to the Florida Wilds which is a boardwalk that allows you to check our the black bears, deer and panthers.
If you are interested in a place that wants to bring visitors and animals together for a memorable and natural connection this is your place. You can feed giraffes, touch and feed stingrays, touch the giant tortoise and even nose to nose with the Indian rhino. There are a lot of areas that allow for kids to have fun as well. From the roller coaster to the splash pad play areas there is no shortage of fun.
The zoo is home to more than 1300 animals and is famous for having one of the most beautiful tropical zoological settings in the world. In 2009, the zoo was voted at the #1 Family Friendly Zoo in the United States and was also recognized by the state as the center for Florida wildlife conservation and biodiversity. The Lowry Park Zoo opened in 1957 at its current location of 1101 W. Sligh Avenue, Tampa, FL 33604.
From Lowry Park to ZooTampa
The rebranding in 2019 came as a part of another renovation and expansion project. This is a highly visited with over 1 million visitors per year. At the park you will find amazing exhibits ranging from the Asian Gardens, Primate World, Wallaroo Station, Safari Africa and more.
Some of the many animals that are located at ZooTampa are Pygmy hippos, Indian rhinos, Malayan tigers, African elephants, koalas, Komodo dragons, red wolves and many other species.
